We found Helen through recommendation. Our brief to her was to extend our 1930’s house to future proof the ground floor and re-orientate the living spaces onto the large rear garden.

Helen’s solution was an elegant contemporary design with glazed sliding doors which complements the existing house. She designed an open plan living space with an unexpected visual surprise when walking from the older part of the house into the new extension.

Helen provided a single point of contact and took the project from inception to completion including handling the planning process, building regulations, contractor tendering, contract administration, surveys and Party Wall Notices. We were involved at every stage of the design process through the use of live 3D modelling and walk-throughs which allowed us to participate in and fully understand the progression of the design.

We found Helen through her website and as we were living abroad and were looking for an architect to
manage our project from start, through design and construction, to handover. Helen’s design has given us a
superb contemporary light-filled extension and a complete refurbishment to our old manor house while still
maintaining the external appearance of the original house. She came up with a beautiful solution to incorporate the old part of the house with the new.
Helen was incredibly easy to work with and was always to hand responding promptly to any of our queries. She
brought in and managed all the necessary consultants required for the project including the structural engineers, quantity
and building surveyors. Her input throughout this three year process was invaluable and we couldn’t have
achieved such a good result without her.

We came across Gaffney Architecture by chance when we saw their scheme for the extension of a local church. The proposal was understated, sympathetic to the existing architecture through referencing its detailing, yet it had maintained its own modern identity. At the time we were looking for someone to work with us on a modern extension to a mid-1930’s house, someone who could design an extension to meet our needs without overpowering the original structure. We searched the local planning register where we found a large number their schemes - all of which were to a very high quality.

When we met Helen, we found her to be both very personable and highly professional. She was keen to understand what we were each looking for before we discussed her initial suggestions. Her knowledge of planning and the latest requirements for building regulations was impressive (and useful as we were looking to use a large amount of glazing). Helen quickly came up with some ideas and after a couple of meetings the result was just what we wanted and more.

It is clear that Gaffney Architecture deliver through the powerful combination of understanding their clients, design flair and construction know-how. We cannot recommend them highly enough.

Helen designed a kitchen/garden room extension for our 1980s house in Horsham. A relatively small project for her, she still presented a vision which, coupled with her attention to detail and guidance along the way, resulted in a space that genuinely became the heart of our home.
