First get the keys from judith glue shop, in front of the church, you dont need to pay or anything, just ask for it and then sign your name and phone on the book she will give to you, after that you have 2 hours to bring the key back, it's more than enough.
The grain house isn't that big, so there isn't much to do down there, and it's a lil bit uncomfortable, but it's cool to check it out.

The Grain Earth House is in the middle of the industrial estate, you need to get keys from Judith Glue, a shop in Kirkwall. It is claimed that this Iron Age monument was built to store grain...hence the name, but it is very damp so I have my doubts. You'll need to take a torch, there is one supplied but it needs some new batteries! Descend the steps into an underground tunnel, where you crawl to a small open area with 4 columns holding the roof. Use your imagination to what this was used for. There's a lot of old graffiti marked into the rocks which is also interesting to find. Mind your head at all times!!

A bit mucky and a bit small. Oddly had an industrial estate around it. Worth a quick look for the antiquity.
Don't forget to bring a torch.
Keys available at the Gillian Glue shop in Kirkwall opposite the cathedral.

You will need a torch 🔦 or 2, Once you have the keys 🔑 (see pics), the front gate lock is stiff, so push the protruding locking bolt while unlocking (see pics) it can be wet inside.

An interesting place to visit in an unlikely position on an Industrial Estate in Kirkwall. Spend some time deciphering the graffiti on the pillars! Key from Judith Glue’s Gift shop.

Orkneys first community fridge! To think how 2800-1500 years ago we had to store food stuffs underground ready for use/planting the following spring, shows how much of a community effort it was for survival.

We've lost that nowadays with independence living and mental health issues from the loneliness that brings. Today farmers manage more land by themselves, more people work from home, we've lost all human interaction.

Hidden gem of a place! Well worth the slight hassle of getting the key from Judith Glue's shop in Kirkwall, if you have your own transport.

Didn't get a chance to go into the site for it being closed, but I did walk around out front.
