We hired Big Bear to work on our loft conversion and side return kitchen extension. They also fitted our bathroom and divided up an existing internal room to create a utility room. Work started in January 2024 and was finished by September. Marc, James and their team were a pleasure to deal with and made the project a lot less stressful than it could’ve been! Communication was good and the standard of work is excellent. We love our new old house and we’re so pleased we chose Big Bear.

My advice to anyone starting out on a project like this using any contractor is to be really clear about the plans from the outset and get down in the detail on what is included and not included in the costs you are given. Don’t make assumptions. It will probably end up costing more than you think as things change along the way, so be prepared for that. Think through the details of where you want things like taps, lights and power points to fit in with how you want to live.

If you can find a way to live somewhere else while the messiest part of the work is happening, do it. It means the builders can get on with things more quickly and you can live somewhere without dirt and noise.

Set expectations from the start on communication and timescales and keep talking throughout the project. Hire a builder you have a good gut feel about and ask to speak to their previous customers.
