A year ago, halfway through the project, I gave DN Associates five stars. I'm now downgrading that having finished the project and lived in the place for eight months.

David's business never finished the work. They just petered out and abandoned the build to move onto more pressing projects. For this reason I withheld final payment, which they have not attempted to claim. They left windows unsealed and brickwork unfinished; they left holes where the electricians mistook their first fixes; and they left scaffolding (which I believe was later stolen).

Even when they were attending, the pace of work slowed dramatically and I had to hassle the site manager and the business owner to commit resources on-site.

While the basic fabric of the building was done to a good standard, and excellent in some ways (the roof is very good), the finishing details were average or below:
- I had to remind them about loft insulation, and only last week I notice that two entire rooms (utility & back hall) have zero loft insulation because they weren't easily accessible.
- Taping and joining left ridges and bumps that were very noticeable when painting (I was informed their professional taper/joiner was "busy" and the site manager and a youngster did it).
- Use of standard plasterboard in a steamy ensuite bathroom.
- Join between old house and new has developed a half-centimetre fall.
- Tiling in the hallway has rather more rise and fall than I would have expected.

There were good points. Like I said, the early phases flew by and met expectations of schedule. The roof was very professionally done. Their electrical (Berry's) and solar (Island Renewables) sub-contractors were excellent (although ASHP/UFH commissioning by the plumbers was amateur). Simon, the site manager, was easy to get on with and generally helpful. The price was good.

But at this point, if I were to work with DN again, I would attempt to secure a commitments to schedule and quality before starting the project.
