This forest is just so magical. You feel how old and ancient everything is. There's a church nearby, and some of the graves are from people who were alive in the 1800s, which is really cool. I would recommend coming here if you love forests and exploring!

Epping Forest in Winter – A Silent, Snow-Draped Escape

Epping Forest transforms into something truly magical in winter. What’s usually a bustling green escape becomes a peaceful, snow-laced sanctuary that feels almost untouched. The paths, framed by frost-covered trees, look like something out of a storybook—stark, quiet, and completely breathtaking.

The walking trails are serene, and as you wander through, all you hear is the soft crunch of snow beneath your feet and the occasional rustle of branches. The frozen lakes and ponds reflect the pale winter sky, adding to the calm, reflective mood that the forest brings this time of year. It’s nature at its rawest and most peaceful.

This isn’t just a great spot for summer strolls—Epping Forest in winter is an entirely different experience. The cold air is fresh and clean, making every breath feel crisp and grounding. Whether you’re walking your dog, going for a mindful solo hike, or just out for some fresh air, the forest gives you space to reset.

And if you’re into photography, winter in Epping is pure gold—icy reflections, frosted trees, and empty roads winding through whitewashed woods.

Free to access, easy to reach, and full of beauty—Epping Forest proves that winter isn’t a season to hide from. It’s one to embrace.

We visited in the winter and were really disappointed in the poor management of the place - flooding with mud, mud and more mud.
It's also incredibly busy compared to the woods and hiking spots to the south of London. Probably wouldn't return unless in the immediate vicinity.
If you're going to heavily promote the area for hiking, you must ensure it's well maintained and accessible.

Loved it really. Being a nature loving person i really enjoyed. Must wear a comfortable walking shoes. Walking inside is not smooth. Ups and down path will make you panting 😮‍💨. But will enjoy at the same time. Carry your own food. Parking is paid.

It was Friday morning, I arrived to Chingford Station, took a coffee at Holy Trail Cafe and went to the forest( the route starts behind the cafe). There are main paths but I liked moving through the forest.
The place felt secure for solo woman.

I loved places like Epping. We were able to totally disconnect, walk in peace along clearly signaled paths and enjoy a type of silence which is totally new living in London. All the people I ran into were families walking their dogs and most of them were greeting us as we crossed paths. An excellent free alternative to disconnect while in London

Great place to walk your dogs. Although be careful of bikes flying down some tracks. Other than that, it's a great place to let your hair down a be a big kid yourself and climb some of the fallen trees, build little tree huts, and generally have good old-fashioned fun.
