I have read previous reviews but I sadly, can’t agree that this has been a 5 * experience for us …so I feel I need to justify the score.

The low score is because throughout the build Andrew Stowe although very affable - showed little interest and minimal presence over the project. A grade 11 listed house 18C and new cart lodge/workshop in a beautiful location close to Woodbridge.

Andrew was very hard to get hold of by both ourselves and his workmen. He seemed to be permanently in meetings or just else where! I found, I had to ask him to come to site or we just didn’t see him. Hence, the project lacked efficient management and caused us much grief trying to push things on.

At the start of the renovation it was evident due to the age of the house it required a skilled work force and an expert project manager. In fairness, some of the tasks involving the structure/beams and lath and plaster were done very well. However, on many occasions work seemed dis-jointed and some - what chaotic with no one person from Stowe’s in charge.

The initial project manager we soon discovered came to the job with a poor previous work record and hadn’t a clue as to what was going on. Andrew was clearly aware of his poor decision making and poor work ethic but ignored the situation. Due to deteriorating morale amongst the workforce, it was left to ourselves to ask him to leave mid-way through the renovation, already falling at least 2 months behind schedule.

This was the right decision but In order to keep the build moving we had to step in ourselves, at our own cost and time. - being on site as much as we could, by many emails and communicating via one of the carpenter/ builders on site.

The builders move on tomorrow to a new build and I believe, there has been no sign of Andrew at the house to cast a final eye in the past 2 weeks.The carpenter has asked him to come out today as we need a source of electricity!!!

We have a half completed driveway that will clearly need to be finished by someone else and looks like a ‘late Friday’ job.There was no digger bought to site today for levelling and they forgot to order a large load of shingle and hence had to transport it in a small truck, back and forth - leaving one guy using a garden rack and the other using driving time and diesel.

Finally, Stowe building contractors ltd are expensive. The invoices did arrive dead on time however, many were shockingly high compared to other good builders in the area - as we have discovered.

For sure, I understand it was a difficult renovation and I knew it would have challenges along the way but there just felt an apathy and lack of drive to the entire build.

After this experience with Stowe building contractors- I would not do it again!
