Neil Cleveland prepared a very thorough survey with copious notes and photographs for a grade 2 listed property that we are looking to purchase. In addition to the report, we found Neil's Zoom presentation very helpful in identifying and guiding us through the key points he'd identified.

We recently built a room in our garden with Whitworth. Our house is a Listed building in a Conservation Area. We had never done anything of this scale or complexity before and knew we needed professional help. We contacted Whitworth and architect Stacey Cobbold (who had previously managed a couple of smaller projects for us).

At the outset we had no fixed ideas about what we wanted - but we knew what we didn’t want. Stacey helped us narrow down our choices. The resulting design is clean, sophisticated and as sustainable as possible within the design parameters we set. On completion of the building we were totally delighted with the result. Once the plans had been finalised there were no major alterations: the project came in on-budget and only slightly off-schedule.

We tried to use natural resources as much as possible with an oak frame, limestone verandah and interior flooring, larch cladding and handmade clay tile roof. There is a rainwater harvesting system which allows us to store two tonnes of water to irrigate the garden.

The building is light, bright and will be a lovely enhancement to the garden for generations

Stacey designed the building and oversaw the construction as project manager. She managed the project through planning, building control & tendering process and was in charge of the project management throughout. Attentive, professional and technically excellent, Whitworth was a first rate choice and we would have no hesitation in recommending their services.

Whitworth have been absolutely excellent in creating imaginative plans that not only followed our brief but added extra zing. Ed Thuell, the lead architect for our project, has additionally been absolutely invaluable in having a comprehensive knowledge of how to steer everything through the complex local authority planning process. We needed plans for a conversion of outbuildings and for an extension. Whitworth's were very quick to respond with Stacey being the nominated architect. Stacey was completely brilliant, we felt that she immediately understood what we were after and was very observant with the construction of the outbuildings and made really insightful suggestions. The plans were detailed and exactly what we were after. She made the planning application which was successful. She helped us find suitable builders and assisted us with follow on questions and advice. Overall it was great value for money and a very positive experience.

The survey from Whitworth was comprehensive, detailed, informative and very useful. The whole process was turned around quickly and efficiently, and we feel we have a valuable document at the end of it. Our instruction had the complication of being (partly) heritage and were recommended the services of Stephen Boniface, whose experience and expertise in the field were clear. Having the opportunity to discuss the survey via a Zoom call was particularly worthwhile.

Very much recommended and worth paying a little more for, if you were to have any cheaper quotes coming in.

Ten stars! I can’t rate Whitworth highly enough for their first rate service. It was really easy to organise the detailed survey with Sarah Searle in their office. The survey was carried out promptly, with a follow-up Zoom call the next morning with the surveyor, Neil Cleveland, who used photos he’d taken and ran through the various issues, suggesting what remedial works would be needed, answered all our questions fully and was just a genuinely helpful and engaging person to deal with. The Zoom call meant we were able to progress our purchase swiftly and we then received the detailed written report within a week, together with supplementary info such as useful websites, additional reading, an index of technical terms and planning jargon.
